The intricate frame-in-frame … Read more 19th Century French Louis XVI Neoclassical Giltwood Mantel Mirror is an exquisite example of Belle Epoque grandeur! The intricate frame-in-frame design still provides a generous reflecting surface to reflect ambient light in the room. The interior frame is detailed with egg and beaded border design, the latter of which is repeated on the inside of the outer frame, with floral & foliate supports on each corner "floating" the interior frame in the design. Stylized foliates appear at the base with extensions to allow mounting on a fireplace mantel or buffet, but with enough ornamentation to allow one to hang the mirror on the wall free style. The upper crown, however, steals the show! A fluted border separates the mirror below from the sensuous foliate scrollwork overlaid on the upper mirror, which cascades down to foliate finials. Above the scrollwork appears a study in ribbon, floral sprays and a cameo of Queen Marie Antoinette in a petite oval frame. The gold finish has achieved a lovely patina over the decades, creating a superlative piece that will surely be the focal point of any room.
