This is a beautifully executed single-piece African Blackwood carving depicting an elephant mother walking protectively beside her calf. The sculpture is carved from one solid block of Mpingo, one of the heaviest and most valuable African hardwoods, renowned for its deep black coloration and metal-like density. The tusks are carved separately from bone and inserted cleanly into the facial structure — a traditional technique used by mid-century Tanzanian artisans.
The sculptor captures excellent naturalistic movement: the mother strides forward with a gently curved trunk, while the calf walks closely at her side, its head lowered in a lifelike posture. The wood’s natural grain enhances the musculature of both animals, with soft transitions and smooth, high-polish finishing typical of skilled Tanzanian workshop carving.
A notable feature is the continuous, uninterrupted grain that runs across the bodies of both elephants, confirming the entire scene is carved from a single block rather than assembled figures. This dramatically increases its decorative and collector value.
The sculpture is priced at the appraised value, reflecting Genuine African Blackwood (Mpingo), single-block carving (more desirable than two separate figures), bone tusks, intact and original, good size, and excellent condition, and Tanzanian mid-century workshop craftsmanship.
The appraisal is available upon request.
