This set of Six (6) Demitasse Cups and Saucers was manufactured by Syracuse China (Onondaga Pottery Company) in 1962, in their "Carvel" pattern.
Condition: Very Good / Near Mint
Detailed Visual Description
These demitasse cups and saucers feature the elegant Carvel pattern, a distinct mid-century design produced on Syracuse China’s proprietary "Federal" shape. The design is characterized by its sophisticated restraint and "Americana" appeal, typical of the early 1960s.
Color Palette: The body of the china is an ivory porcelain, providing a warm neutral background. The primary decoration consists of alternating panels of cornflower blue and ivory. Overlaying the blue and ivory bands are delicate gold filigree scrolls. The gold work is intricate, featuring swirling acanthus-like leaves that add a formal touch to the otherwise simple geometric banding.
The cups and saucers feature the "Federal" shape, which is known for its scalloped or fluted edges. This fluting gives the rim of the saucer and the body of the cup a gentle, wave-like texture that catches the light. The handle is typically dainty and curled, accented with gold. The rims of both the cups and the saucers are edged in 22k gold, framing the blue panels and scrollwork.
As a demitasse set, these pieces are significantly smaller than standard teacups. They stand approximately 2 ¼ to 2 ½ inches tall, designed specifically for serving strong coffee, such as espresso or Turkish coffee, after a formal dinner.
Saucer: 4.5"D x 4.5"W x 0.5"H
Cup: 3.5"D x 2.5"W x 2.75"H

Glaze: The surface is glossy and smooth, free of "crazing" (fine spiderweb cracks in the glaze). Surface: There are no utensil marks or scratches in the "well" of the saucer or the bottom of the cup, confirming they have never been used for service. There is one tiny "fleabite" chip to the underside of one saucer. less
