A mid 19th century French Louis Philippe, bibliotheque or display cabinet, made of solid walnut. This large scale library bookcase is from the Southwest of France. The upper part has three sections each with four shelves and a crown with a frieze of Gothic style decorative pointed arches. The interior of the bookcase has remnants of old green painted finish that had been papered over and now removed. The shelves are 11 inches deep and are nicely detailed with a double bullnose edge. The large lower cabinet rests on eight feet and has six dovetailed drawers with turned wood knobs (one replaced) above three double doors, each with working lock and key and opening to one interior shelf. Good craftsmanship using pegged construction. Pine as secondary wood. Waxed patina. Sturdy and free standing. A versatile rustic case piece, perfect for display of collectibles, pottery and dishes or for use as a bookcase. In good restored condition with beautiful original patina.
