Originating from France circa 1890-1900, this 6x10 antique Aubusson flatweave style rug is a rare curation from its period. Handwoven in a blend of wool and metallic threads, its design enjoys repeat cartouches with floral patterns in hues of beige-brown, red and blue with golden-chartreuse undertones.
On the design:
This flatweave is an especially collectible piece, both for its rare construction and unusual design alike.
Its all over pattern is uniquely symmetrical and geometric, whereas Aubussons are often known for more impressionistic designs.
The repeat also creates a positive-negative sense of space—almost reminiscent of the signature tessellation patterns by M.C. Escher—which creates a beautiful sense of dimension. It’s truly a feat to achieve this element so naturally in handweaving—the mark of a masterpiece, regal and surely one-of-a-kind.
Condition:
This antique Aubusson rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin. It’s ready for the floor, and is equally suitable as a wall-hanging tapestry in its construction and sensibility alike.
