Marilyn Monroe — “White Sheets” Contact Sheet, After Douglas Kirkland (1961)
This large-format contact-sheet artwork captures Marilyn Monroe in one of the most intimate photographic sessions of her life — the famed White Sheets shoot with Douglas Kirkland, photographed in Los Angeles on the evening of November 17, 1961. In the year before her death on August 5, 1962, Monroe embodied her enduring contradictions: the American girl next door, the seductress, and the unstable icon whose vulnerability only deepened her legend.
Kirkland, then a young photographer at Look Magazine, found himself pulled into an unexpected dynamic. Monroe dismissed every assistant, insisting it be just the two of them. The room shifted — quiet, charged, undeniably intimate.
“Yes, she proposed my getting into bed with her, and what red-blooded young man wouldn't?” Kirkland later said. “The exception was I had a wife and two kids back home… and something just stopped me.” He redirected all that tension into his lens. “I pumped the force of it into the pictures.”
This artwork channels that energy — Marilyn cocooned in white sheets, slipping effortlessly between innocence and seduction across sequential frames. It’s a cinematic slice of Hollywood mythology, distilled into one commanding piece.
