Description:
This artist's mannequin dates to the late 19th century - early 20th century and represents a mix of academic utility and folk art expression. Measuring 32.5 inches in height, this hand carved figure was designed as a life model for artists to study human anatomy, proportion, and gesture before the creation of photography.

Unlike the more standardized or factory produced lay figures of the 20th century, this mannequin has a handcrafted, folk art character. The facial features are simply carved, including hand carved ears adding an anthropomorphic feel to the piece. The figure’s surface bears a patina consistent with age and use, but still in very good condition.

The mannequin features articulated joints at the shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, neck, hips, knees, and ankles, all of which remain functional and capable of holding a variety of poses. However, the feet, while still attached, are no longer fixed in place and now dangle freely—they cannot be positioned or held at a specific angle.

Lay figures of this scale were often reserved for professional studios or academic institutions and were used to help artists study light, shadow, and form without the need for a live model.

Condition:
Overall structurally sound, with expected wear consistent with age. Joints remain operable except for the feet, which are loosely attached but not poseable. Surface exhibits a deep, aged patina with minor abrasions and marks from studio use.
