The Turkish Jajim, also known as cecim, is a weaving technique prevalent in Turkey and the Caucasus, characterized by a plain weave (equal warps and wefts) foundation with an added supplementary weft pattern. This method involves discontinuous wefts that are cut off on the verso (back), allowing the pattern to develop directly on the loom rather than being added post-weave like embroidery. This technique facilitates the creation of repeating geometric patterns such as squares, lozenges, diamonds, and stepped diagonal lines, as well as areas of plain color.
Jajim rugs are sometimes crafted in two pieces, which are then stitched together along one long side to accommodate the width limitations of the loom. The tradition of Jajim weaving dates back to the 19th century in Turkey. Due to their domestic utility and the tendency to discard them when worn, few early vintage examples have survived. Typically, Jajims are found in good condition in modern times because it is often easier and more feasible to weave a new rug than to repair a damaged one, preserving this craft’s rich heritage and continued practice.
