Summary
Exceptional pair of French Grand Tour patinated bronze urns in the Warwick Vase tradition, each raised on a fluted black Belgian marble plinth. The bowls are encircled by expressive classical masks and bold ribboned handles, with original gilt brass interiors and handsome, deep brown patina. At 12.5 inches tall, these read as serious sculptural statements rather than small souvenirs.
Dating and Background Information
The form derives from the famous ancient Roman Warwick Vase, discovered at Hadrian’s Villa in the 18th century and widely copied by leading French and Italian bronziers throughout the 19th century. The robust krater form, frieze of masks, heavy strap handles, and egg-and-dart rim all speak to an early–to–mid 19th century date, circa 1840–1860. The quality of the casting, the finely chased details in the bearded masks and handles, and the use of black Belgian marble pedestals align with better Paris workshops producing serious Grand Tour bronzes for affluent travelers and collectors.
Each urn retains its gilt brass liner, now softly patinated from age and gentle use. The deep, even patination on the exterior is consistent with 19th century surfaces rather than later aftercasts, and the underside hardware and oxidation patterns further support the period attribution.
Collector Notes
Pairs of Warwick Vase–inspired urns on original stone plinths are increasingly difficult to find, especially in this size and weight. The combination of French Grand Tour pedigree, handsome black Belgian marble bases, and strong neoclassical presence makes this pair well suited to an advanced decorative-arts or sculpture collection. They compare favorably to other 19th century Warwick-type vases offered at the higher end of the market.
Decorating Ideas
These urns have the scale and authority to anchor a console, mantel, or sideboard, whether in a traditional, eclectic, or richly layered contemporary interior. Flank a mirror or important painting, place them at the ends of a marble-top commode, or use them as dramatic bookends on a long library shelf. Their dark patina and black marble bases pair beautifully with giltwood frames, rich woods, and other bronzes.

Condition
Very good antique condition. The patinated bronze surfaces show minor rubs and small age-appropriate marks consistent with careful use and handling. The gilt brass interiors exhibit light oxidation, faint spotting, and modest wear to the gilding from use as bowls. The black Belgian marble plinths present well, with scattered small abrasions and edge rubs expected for the age and weight of the pieces. Wear to the narrow band of gilt scroll decoration at the bottom of the bases is visible but not distracting. Overall, the pair is clean, stable, and ready to place.
