Watching the Plane is an abstract composition built from expressive black oil-marker lines that weave, loop, and collide across the page, forming a vibrant interplay between floral shapes and lightly suggested figures. The central element — a large flower with purple, blue, and amber petals — anchors the image, spreading its petals outward like an explosion of color. Around it, small circular forms in bright red and orange pulse like sparks of movement, while elongated shapes rise vertically, hinting at stems, towers, or watching silhouettes.
The piece's rhythm feels spontaneous yet intentional. Layers of acrylic washes in soft blues, violets, greens, and ochres fill the interior of each form, giving body to the gestures and transparency to the composition. The scribbled lines act like an emotional handwriting, capturing a fleeting moment — a sense of people or shapes turning their heads upward, following something in the sky. The atmosphere is playful and animated, with a childlike wonder embedded in the loose, swirling marks.
I love it because the piece carries a lightness and immediacy that feels almost like a memory drawn in mid-air. The large flower becomes a focal point of energy, while the other shapes appear to be reacting to an unseen event, giving the artwork movement and narrative without becoming literal. The contrast between the intense reds and purples and the softer pastel hues creates a dynamic tension that keeps the eye traveling across the surface. It is joyful, loose, and full of breath.
Created using oil markers and acrylics on paper, the piece combines strong graphic lines with washes of color that enhance the dynamic gestures and layered atmosphere.
