A fine German classical oil on canvas by the genre and portrait artist Albert Friedrich Schröder (1854-1939), signed & dated 1899.
The painting is by one of Germany's prolific classical genre painters of the late 19th and early 20th century, he also painted narrative compositions in an academically classical style.
This very finely executed painting rendered in oil paint on canvas, in the original gilt frame, depicts a cavalier in his large brimed hat sitting alone at a table, gazing out at the viewer and holding an empty fluted glass. Behind him on a barrel is a smoking pipe and an extinguished candle in a candle holder. On the table, a blue and white Delft pottery wine jug sits atop a red tablecloth and an impressively delicately rendered doily. An empty plate and silverware along with an enamled & gilded glass vessel give the impression that the figure is perhaps at a dining establishment such as a tavern, having completed a hearty meal and a few glasses of wine and looks to be in a a merry mood! The painting is signed and dated lower left "A. Schröder 1899". painting is housed in the original giltwood & gesso frame. Condition is excellent and this handsome painting is ready to hang on your wall.
Schröder studied at the Weimar Art School with Charles Verlat (1824–1890) and from 1876 with Ferdinand Pauwels (1830–1904) at the Kunstakademie Dresden. Albert Friedrich Schröder was fond of historical and costume painting – and did much historical research to accurately depict the settings and dress of his narrative subjects.
After his studies, he moved to Munich in 1883, where he worked as a painter. He created mainly genre images in the style of Dutch painting of the 17th and 18th. century. Schröder’s works are located in many museums & galleries including Duisburg and Magdeburg.
Schröder was known for his genre scenes, often depicting daily life and lively social interactions in detailed, narrative compositions.
The artist very effectively painted this by utilising light and colours to highlight the sitter in his surroundings.
