A graphite study depicting an older man seated and wearing a hat. The drawing comes directly from Stanley Spencer’s personal sketchbook. Last two pictures are of the sketchbook itself (the actual sketchbook is not included). The sheet is stamped in the lower left corner with the Christie’s “Stanley Spencer Studio Sale” stamp and numbered “119” in pen on the verso, visible under plexiglass. Newly framed in a blond wood frame with archival matting and glazing. In good condition with minor wear consistent with age.

Artist Biography:
Sir Stanley Spencer RA (1891–1959) was one of the leading figures in 20th-century British art. Trained at the Slade School of Fine Art, he is known for his detailed figurative works that often combined scenes of daily life with biblical subjects. Spencer lived and worked primarily in Cookham, Berkshire, a village that became central to his artistic vision. His works are held in major public collections, including Tate Britain, the National Gallery (London), the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge), and the Stanley Spencer Gallery (Cookham). See less
