Created on … Read more This exquisite miniature Orthodox icon depicts the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, beautifully rendered in traditional hand-painted technique. Created on a wood panel prepared with gesso, the icon features finely modeled facial details, rich jewel-toned pigments, and raised gilt accents applied by hand. The fish-scale patterned background and stylized inscriptions are consistent with devotional workshop icons found throughout Greece and Turkey in the late 19th to early 20th century.

The icon was acquired in Istanbul and retains its original character, including natural wear along the edges where the gesso ground is visible. Despite its intimate size, the craftsmanship is remarkable, and the piece has a strong spiritual and visual presence.

A meaningful addition for collectors of Byzantine, Greek, and Eastern Orthodox religious art. I purchased this in Instanbul Turkey about 25 years ago
