The sterling overlay is stamped 925 together with a tight sequence of tiny touchmarks that do not conform cleanly to the British assay system; the safest attribution is continental sterling overlay applied to a high-quality art glass blank, probably Continental or American in origin.

Provenance: From the collection of Arvin Spell of Covington, Georgia, a noted collector whose antebellum residence, Boxwood, has been documented for its important assemblage of Federal antiques and Napoleonic material. The quality of this decanter is entirely in keeping with that pedigree.

Overall, the piece presents as clean, bright, and ready to display.
