This piece of artwork was acquired directly from the artist in the Wynwood/Overtown area of Miami, Florida at his studio in 1998. Purvis paints with found materials using house paint and this work of art is very typical for those who collect his art. This painting is on found cardboard with applied paper and framed by the artist with colorful nylon strips of material. Importantly, Purvis signed this work of art “Young” as he always did.

Good condition, and in keeping with the artist outsider style, there are pieces of the nylon that are attached but raised off the cardboard. That’s why floating it inside a frame, the painting is dimensional and not flat. The cardboard used is made with two pieces of cardboard attached to one another. Also, very typical for this untrained artist that uses found materials.

Purvis Young’s artwork is widely collected. His work is published in several books, hangs in over 22 museums and is collected by collectors worldwide.

When asked of Purvis “what was the inspiration for what you paint”, he replied, “I paint what I see on the streets of Miami”. Specifically, this painting as described by him, was of warriors with their arms raised above their head. Probably also inspired haven been in prison.

It is suggested that this painting be floated in a frame under glass. A sample of that is featured in the additional photos section of another painting of Purvis’ on cardboard.

Please note, your framing decision is yours by all means, but this painting really takes on a much richer and important look if FLOATED inside a frame with a little bit of it being raised off the matte itself and floating.
