Brown was widely admired for his sentimental scenes of musicians, street performers, and working-class characters, and his compositions were frequently studied and copied by artists of the period.

This work is executed in oil on canvas and retains its original New York art-supply retailer label from M.H. Hartmann, 19 Union Square West, dating the piece to approximately 1890–1910. The painting is presented in an ornate, period gilt frame that complements the subject beautifully.
