Warm aged mellow honey toned … Read more Scarce 18th century American Chippendale Cherry Serpentine Chest of Drawers with original or period brasses. Warm aged mellow honey toned finished. The molded edge serpentine shaped top over conforming case, four graduated drawers, raising on out swept shape spurred ogee feet. This design and construction is an example of high-end New England furniture from the late 18th century, likely originating from a major urban center such as Boston or Salem. The piece features a dramatic reverse-serpentine (oxbow) front, a form that was a specialized New England hallmark and rarely, if ever produced by contemporary Philadelphia who preferred standard serpentine.

The pieced has elite joinery. The drawer bottoms feature front-to back grain orientation, a diagnostic "tell" of high-end urban workshop mastery rather than provincial construction. Crafted from select figured sherry the drawer fronts exhibit a vibrant "tiger" figure that provides exceptional visual rhythm across the oxbow curves.
