Introducing a very rare coffee / end table designed by John Dickinson for Drexel and produced between 1961-1962 as part of a very limited edition design from Drexel's 'Et Cetera' collection. This playful table features three large Shakespeare books with vinyl book covers that make up the tabletop, with the middle book housing a clever pull-out drawer with a bookmark serving as the drawer pull.
The Drexel Furniture Co. began over a hundred years ago in Hickory, North Carolina with a single product and a simple vision. The product was a made-to-order dining chair. In the decades since, their product range has evolved into an assortment of timeless designs, drawn from significant periods and places, and from the talents of some of the world's most respected designers such as the aforementioned Dickinson. Drexel is still producing pieces to this day with much reverence given to their craftsmanship and use of natural materials.
The beveled oak molding and ball-end feet serve as the platform for the books. Black lacquered resin rods and nuts serve as the stretchers. Due to the cost and intense hand work required to make these tables, they were offered for only a short time in the early 1960's. With so few of these splendid tables available for sale and even fewer still in such excellent original, vintage condition this whimsical table won't last long. Make it yours today before it's gone forever.
