An exquisite 1940s Art Deco sideboard sourced in Paris, France, exemplifying the refined craftsmanship and elegant geometry of French Art Deco design, attributed to Jules Leleu. The cabinet is executed in richly figured macassar ebony, its deep espresso and amber tones brought to life by a hand-polished finish. The façade combines a striking basket-weave marquetry pattern at the center with gently curved side doors that follow the soft undulating line of the base. The top is fitted with an impressive slab of Italian Nero Portoro marble, characterized by its dramatic black ground veined with ribbons of gold, beige, and white. The stone is framed by a sculpted macassar border that subtly lifts it above the cabinet body, emphasizing the layered, architectural composition. Original brass hardware includes finely cast geometric escutcheons on the center doors and elegant C-form ring pulls on the sides, all with a beautiful aged patina. The piece retains its three original circular brass keys, designed to match the escutcheons—a signature detail of high-end Parisian cabinetmaking of the period. Inside, the cabinet reveals an oak-lined interior with curved adjustable shelves finished with inlaid marquetry edging, and a central section fitted with four dovetailed drawers lined in deep red felt. The precision of the joinery and the attention to finish throughout showcase the refinement associated with Leleu’s atelier. The base is visually anchored by alternating macassar and maple bands, the lighter tone accentuating the sculptural profile and grounding the design with a sense of balance and proportion. A sophisticated and luxurious example of 1940s French Art Deco, masterfully combining material richness with timeless elegance.
