This striking architectural salvage find is a matching pair of original cast iron Corinthian-style column capitals, a fine example of mid-19th century Neoclassical design. Cast in 1849 by the JL Jackson Company of New York, each capital is a testament to the city’s early architectural heritage and industrial craftsmanship. The JL Jackson Company was one of the premier iron foundries in New York City during the 1800s, known for producing decorative and structural cast iron elements that adorned many of the city’s early buildings. As New York experienced rapid urban growth, firms like JL Jackson played a vital role in shaping the city’s architectural identity, supplying everything from facades and staircases to ornamental columns like these.
These particular capitals are made of solid cast iron and each weighs approximately 15 pounds. Its design draws heavily from classical Corinthian motifs, featuring deeply cast acanthus leaves and volute-like detailing. The original pale green paint remains partially intact, though naturally weathered and chipped, revealing areas of exposed rust and iron beneath. This worn, time-earned patina only enhances its historic character and appeal. Measuring 10 inches wide by 10 inches deep and standing 7.5 inches tall, it is a beautifully proportioned piece ideal for display on a shelf, table, or pedestal. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
As a pair, these capitals offer not just decorative value, but also a tangible connection to early New York City design and industry—making them perfect for collectors of architectural salvage, vintage industrial decor, or anyone with an appreciation for authentic American history.
