Description
A vivid, witty, and meticulously layered original collage by American artist John S. Fawcett, titled Mickey Mouse Weekly #105 – Left-Handed (and Six Years Later #1). Executed in mixed media on paper, 22 × 30 inches, this work exemplifies Fawcett’s playful engagement with pop culture through comic imagery, color xerography, and hand-inked linework. The composition collides classic Mickey Mouse Weekly and Topolino frames with Fawcett’s own surreal interventions—robotic mice, looping textual fragments, and a tongue-in-cheek nod to Disney nostalgia and artistic process.
Dating and Background
Created in 1982 and exhibited at OK Harris Works of Art in New York’s SoHo district, one of the leading galleries of contemporary Pop and Conceptual art founded by Ivan Karp. Fawcett (American, active 1970s–1990s) produced a small series of collage works reinterpreting mass-media icons, often signed, inscribed, and uniquely composed—each a one-of-a-kind meditation on reproduction and authorship. This example retains its original OK Harris gallery label on verso and provenance from the Estate of Oscar Lakeman, an artist and collector of contemporary American mixed media.
Collector Notes
OK Harris provenance affirms the piece’s New York Pop pedigree. Fawcett’s collage work has become increasingly appreciated for its wit and its dialogue between high art and popular imagery. The Lakeman estate connection further strengthens its traceable ownership history, aligning two artists known for narrative experimentation.
