They were different from "modern" day hibachi since they were round metal pans set in lacquered trays. But in the 17th century, they were designed as wood rectangle boxes, a Tansu, and designed to use charcoal for cooking and became focal points of a home.

These "modern" hibachi had copper ash receptacles positioned in low wooden boxes, as can be seen from the above photos with slight "burned" wood parts. In more modern times, the coper insets and hibachi were not used for cooking.

The hibachi pictured was initially built in the Meiji-Era but the copper insert can only be certified as being at least 50 years old. All parts, except for the copper insert are original.

The last photo is a sample of how to use this unique historic piece of old Japan. One can cover the copper with glass and place a plant on top of it as a corner piece of a sofa - as shown. See less
