This is a Marajoara terra-cotta pottery vessel. Marajoara pottery is made by the natives of Marajo island which is in northern Brazil. Marajoara art is composed mainly of ceramic artifacts which were first discovered in the late 1800s. They are known for their incredibly detailed work in their ceramics and culture in general. Many of the pieces, like this one, features deeply etched faces and geometric patterns, which are characteristic of Marajoara design.
The designs found on Marajoara ceramics influenced Art Deco artists of Brazil and incorporated into Art Deco style. Interior design started using the detailed patterns found on Marajoara ceramics in furniture, dinnerware and architecural design.
