additional information:
the viennese cabinetmaking workshop friedrich otto schmidt was founded by carl friedrich schmidt in vienna in 1858 and developed into one of the most renowned workshops for exclusive furniture and decorative arts in the danube monarchy and beyond.
the company received its later name when otto erdmann schmidt, the founder's son, joined the business – from then on, it operated as the "technical studio for interior decorations."
the studio not only produced individual pieces of furniture, but also designed entire interiors. The range included stucco and fireplace decorations, wall paneling, and complete furnishings in the historicist style. Later, the reform movement and viennese modernism also influenced the designs. In collaboration with renowned architects and artists, such as adolf loos, outstanding pieces were created that are now considered sought-after collector's items – including the famous "elephant's trunk table." the company also created furniture designs for josef hoffmann, which were exhibited as part of the vienna secession. This glass cabinet is an excellent example of the formative influences of viennese modernism and its protagonists on the company's designs. From 1904 onwards, the company headquarters were located in the baroque chotek palace at währinger straße 28 in the 9th district, which was permanently shaped by the company's presence and activities. Today, the works of friedrich otto schmidt are considered important examples of viennese cabinetmaking and furniture craftsmanship at the turn of the 20th century.
