HISTORY
Rolan Lachman was a mid-century Guyanese folk artist whose painted wood plaques were sold through small Georgetown craft shops and carried home by travelers as keepsakes of the era. Very few of his works were ever personally signed, and still fewer have survived in such extraordinary condition.
This hand-painted plaque presents a vivid panorama of Kaieteur Falls and the surrounding region, preserved beneath a lustrous amber varnish. The angled cut, bark edge, and varnish overflow confirm it was individually handcrafted by Lachman himself.
On the reverse, a faint handwritten message reads, “From Lionel + [Cathy?] to Janet.” It was clearly a gift — a treasure chosen and given with care. That small inscription adds a deeply human layer to the piece. You can almost imagine Lionel and possibly Cathy selecting it, wanting Janet to have something meaningful from this place and time. Their gesture lingers within the wood itself, turning it from an artwork into a personal story — one that still invites wonder about who they were and what the gift meant.
For collectors of Caribbean folk art, this signed Rolan Lachman plaque holds not only artistic and historical significance, but a rare emotional resonance — a tangible link to the people, places, and sentiments that shaped its journey.
