Description:
These two rare 1931 issues (No. 2 and No. 4) of the seminal French art journal Cahiers d’Art exemplify its pioneering role in modernist discourse. Founded in 1926 by Christian Zervos, the magazine—published irregularly but up to ten times a year—bridged avant-garde art, archaeology, and critical theory, featuring luminaries like Picasso, Matisse, Léger, Miró, and Brâncuși alongside ethnographic and architectural studies.

- Tristan Tzara on collage ("Le Papier Collé ou le Proverbe en Peinture")
- Georges Duthuit’s conclusion on Fauvism ("Le Fauvisme (Fin)")
- Christian Zervos on emerging painters ("La Jeune Peinture")
- Siegfried Giedion on modern architecture
- Coverage of Persian art at London’s International Exhibition (Arthur Upham Pope)
Highlights of Issue No. 4 (1931):
- Byzantine art exhibition critique (Duthuit & Tyler)
- Zervos’s essay on the struggles of young painters
- Willi Baumeister’s response to an Inquiry on Abstract Art
