Timeless Piece of American Sporting Heritage
Step into the thrill of 19th-century bird hunting with this authentic hand-colored lithograph from Currier & Ives, titled American Field Sports. “On a Point” (Gale #0163). Two vigilant English Setters hold steady as quail flush from dense underbrush—capturing the excitement of the field in exquisite detail. Based on Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait’s original painting, published in 1857, this small-folio print embodies the firm’s golden era of American art, celebrated for its vivid depiction of rural life.
Provenance with Curatorial Legacy
Sourced from a distinguished private collection linked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s curatorial heritage, this piece carries a rich history. The original reprinted frame, marked with a “1867” notation (possibly a later edition mark) and a vintage Kirk’s Camera Supply label (Grand Haven, MI), traces its journey through trusted hands. Preserved with care, it’s offered as a unique find for discerning collectors.
Based on an original painting by Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (1819–1905), born in England and emigrated to New York in 1850, where he became renowned for his detailed sporting art, capturing American wildlife and hunting scenes. His naturalistic style, honed in the Adirondacks, made him a favorite of Currier & Ives, who reproduced his works, including the 1857 American Field Sports series with On a Point. A member of the National Academy of Design since 1851, Tait’s legacy endures in collectors’ circles. Verso features the 1857 copyright imprint, with a faint ‘1857’ notation near the ‘A. F. Tait’ signature
