Château de Maintenon. In your mind’s eye, you might imagine that every château in France looks like this - a fairy tale, a romantic vision of Europe’s past, as a flock of Canadian geese drifts south for the winter. Construction of the Château de Maintenon began in the 13th century and continued, in stages, over the next five hundred years. Most notably, the estate was purchased in 1674 by Françoise d’Aubigné, Madame de Maintenon - the second wife of King Louis XIV - and was partly reconfigured by the celebrated landscape architect André Le Nôtre. Versailles, after all, lies only thirty-five miles away.
