the refined coastal view we present is a signed and dated work by the dutch landscape painter hubertus van hove (the hague, 1814 - antwerp, 1865), son of bartholomeus van hove (1790-1880). The work displays excellent taste and quality of execution, revealing a tender, romantic feeling for nature, a mastery of drawing, and a truly astonishing delicacy of chiaroscuro and harmony.
although his main output was concentrated on works depicting domestic scenes, he was also an excellent landscape painter, a master in the use of light, which he infused into his works through rapid, precise brushstrokes, creating lively compositions like the one in this catalog.
here we see a glimpse of one of the most enchanting beaches in the netherlands, just a few kilometers from the city of the hague, overlooking the north sea. This area, starting in the 17th century, became a popular seaside resort for the citizens of nearby the hague, for entertainment, strolling, and buying fish.
it's a bright day on a wide, sandy beach, populated by numerous people who have come to breathe the crisp sea air and are engaged in various activities. In the foreground, we see a well-dressed couple on horseback, likely on a seaside trip, accompanied by a servant and a cavalier, observing the catch laid out on the beach by a family of fishermen. Behind them, a carriage has stopped; the wealthy passenger is chatting with another bourgeois couple, while a servant protects them from the sun with an umbrella.
the space is occupied primarily by the sky, pierced by a few clouds and illuminated by a pale sun. The clear, delicate light lends a great sense of tranquility to the composition.
the dutch were the first to think of the sea in a "modern" sense, as a place of leisure, and already in the 17th century, scheveningen beach, famous for being the subject of paintings by vincent van gogh, was a place of pastime and outdoor activities.
many flemish artists, first and foremost adriaen van de velde, often depicted this very beach, teeming with middle-class people enjoying their leisure time, as well as the fishermen who inhabited the area year-round. Among the most famous works are "the beach at scheveningen" (staatliche museen, kassel) and "carriage on the beach at scheveningen" (the royal collection, buckingham palace) [1], both by adriaen van de velde, which closely resemble the painting we are offering, and from which our artist must have drawn inspiration.
