Rare 17th-century edition of Titi Petronii Arbitri Satyricon, attributed to the Roman writer Gaius Petronius Arbiter. The Satyricon, originally written in the 1st century CE during the reign of Emperor Nero, is one of the earliest examples of Latin fiction and a cornerstone of Roman satire.
This particular edition, edited by Johannes Boschius (Johannes Bosch), was published in Amsterdam by Adrianum Gaesbequium in 1677. The title page bears an early ink signature, likely from a former owner, and features ornate typographic flourishes typical of the era. The book is bound in brown leather with gilt tooling and a central scallop shell motif on the cover, a symbol often associated with pilgrimage or classical learning.
Both a literary and historical artifact—melding the wit and decadence of ancient Rome with the craftsmanship of early modern European bookbinding and printing.
