Rare, museum-quality Pima–Papago coiled basket with domed lid, circa turn of the 20th century. Handcrafted from yucca (or split willow) with devil’s claw inlay, the basket displays a natural grassy-tan body contrasted by deep-brown geometric motifs. With lid, measures approximately 20" high × 24" wide; weight ~15 lbs.
Condition: Excellent for age — intact coiling and secure lid. Minor wear consistent with age and use, including light surface soiling and subtle color fade; no major breaks or repairs visible. Photos show close-up details and overall condition. See notes under condition for added detail.
Provenance: Attributed to a Pima–Papago artisan; period piece, not a modern reproduction. Discovered among belongings at a Southern Maryland estate sale of a Native American family matriarch.
Why collectors love it:
* Unusually large scale for Pima–Papago basketry
* Strong graphic pattern that translates well in modern and traditional interiors
* Ideal for collectors of Native American textiles and ethnographic antiques
Shipping & Handling: Will pack securely for museum-grade shipment. Local pick-up available in the Washington, DC suburbs. Shipping quote available upon request; buyer pays shipping and insurance.

It currently leans slightly to one side from having been stored without proper support for an extended time. Soil remnants at the bottom indicate it previously held a large potted plant; these have since been removed. After reshaping and standing it upright with proper support, it should return to a balanced position. less
