A signed and framed oil on canvas by listed American artist Claire B.Cotts. Untypical of her style, the picture shows a portrait of a mother and child besides a window. The child has a bird tied with a ribbon to her wrist, and in the distance can be seen a lemon tree full of fruit and a castle turret. Signed in the lower right, and set in a richly carved wooden frame.
"Claire B Cotts is known for her richly layered abstractions that visually blend the forces of disorder and entropy with balance and structure to create pieces of arresting beauty. Using a colorful, yet muted palette, her paintings inhabit a space between texture and rhythm, between form and motion. She uses a process of accretion to slowly build up her surfaces so that the elements are integrated, almost imperceptibly, into complex compositions that resonate with organic shapes and fragmentary bits of memory.
Cotts has been exhibiting her distinctive, richly layered figurative and abstract canvases for over twenty-five years. Her work has exhibited nationally, and is represented in numerous private and corporate collections. Cotts has had solo exhibitions at the SFMOMA artists gallery in San Francisco, CA, and has participated in exhibitions at: Marin MOCA (Marin Museum of Contemporary Art) in Novato, CA; MOCHA (Museum of Children's Art) in Oakland, CA; The California Museum of Art in Santa Rosa, CA; the San Francisco Jewish Museum, in San Francsico, CA; as well as the University Art Museum at the University of California in Berkeley, CA.
Originally from Atlanta, Claire B Cotts lives and works in Berkeley, California. She studied art at Oberlin College, and received her MFA from University of California at Berkeley. She also studied at SACI, the Studio Art Center International, in Florence, Italy; received a Fulbright Fellowship for painting in Turkey; received a printmaking fellowship at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA, and a full fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center. She is recently back from an artist residency at Olive Stack Gallery in Listowel, Ireland, and is one of the artists chosen for The de Young Open, an upcoming exhibition in San Francisco celebrating the 125th anniversary of the de Young museum."
