Authentic mid-century Drexel Heritage Federal Revival china cabinet, circa 1950-1955.
Features an intact broken pediment crown with spiral finial, mullioned glass doors, and a serpentine-front base with three drawers and two lower cabinets, each with a middle shelf inside. Constructed of mahogany veneer over solid hardwood with cedar drawer bottoms and tight dovetail joinery. Retains its original brass hardware and rich, warm red-brown finish.
Stamped across the back is “D.748-19 MAH” identifying this model as part of Drexel’s Federal Court line in mahogany finish.
HISTORY:
Drexel rarely used paper labels before the mid-1950s. Earlier and higher-end lines were simply marked with an ink or burn stamp and a production code, as seen on this piece.
D.748-19 MAH — Drexel Federal Court Collection
• “D” stands for Drexel, the manufacturer.
• “748” is the collection or style group number, identifying the Federal Court line — a traditional, early-American revival series produced in the late 1940s through the early 1960s.
• “-19” refers to the specific model number within that collection — in this case, a china cabinet / display cabinet variation.
• “MAH” designates the finish or wood type — mahogany.
So the stamp indicates:
Drexel Furniture Co. – Federal Court Collection, Model 748-19, Mahogany Finish.
This particular Federal Court series was built in North Carolina, featuring solid mahogany and veneered panels, dovetail joinery, brass hardware, and Colonial Revival design motifs such as spindled finials and inlaid banding.
This mark places the piece within Drexel’s early postwar production era, circa 1950–1955, when the company was producing some of its most collectible and well-made furniture lines.
CONDITION:
Condition: Small chip to the very tip of the upper finial, a few minor nicks from age, and a localized section of veneer inlay loss along the middle lower front edge (see photo). Structurally sound and stable. Overall very good vintage condition. The drawers slide in and out smoothly and effortlessly, and each cabinet opens and closes perfectly. Each cabinet door closes with the satisfying little click sound.
