"Avenue" is a bright, uplifting, abstract expressionist oil painting by celebrated contemporary artist, Monica Shulman. This painting is inspired by one of Monica's favorite seasons, summer, and one of Monica’s favorite neighborhood’s in New York - where Chelsea meets the Meatpacking district underneath the Highline. The energy of that area of New York City, just like all other parts of the city, is palpable and Monica wanted to capture the colorful, nonstop movement of the people, streets and lights against the concrete backdrop that is Manhattan.
Monica punctuates her rhythmic, gestural marks and paint drips with varying, heavily layered shades of indigo, blue, green, white, yellow and pink. This is a vivid, large format painting that will add colorful dimension and depth to any space. The wide range of colors and broad strokes is mesmerizing. This artwork tells many stories and the varied texture and bold brushwork force the eye to travel around the painting. Cracking and peeling in the paint is purpose and creates a sculptural texture.
Monica has been featured in various publications including Popular Photography, Create magazine, the Washington Post and the Huffington Post. In 2019 she was named "Best Artist" in Westchester by Westchester Magazine. She is a member of the prestigious National Association of Women Artists. Her work has been shown at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City, Photo LA, Art Market Hamptons, PULSE Art Fair, the National Arts Club in NYC, Frieze Los Angeles, and the New York Mercantile Exchange, among others. Her work is in numerous private collections across the globe. Most recently, Monica showed a collection of work inside Bergdorf Goodman in NYC with the Chairish Gallery.
***PLEASE NOTE: Due to its size, this painting, made on Belgium linen, ships unmounted and ROLLED inside a tube. It can be easily stretched (and framed, if preferred) by a framer. It can be hung either vertically or horizontally as Buyer prefers. The linen canvas is painted all the way to the edge and there is plenty of extra canvas for stapling around the sides and back. The painting also has natural cracks due to the oil paint. It is not damaged but purposeful. Please contact Monica via Chairish if you would like to see more photographs or details. Alternatively, the painting can be mounted rather than stretched - it is Buyer's choice. The painting is shown in a photo as framed simply to show framing as a possible option once purchased.
