Aleksander Pilar (1912-1989)
Watercolorist, born in 1912 in Sevastopol. Died in 1989 in Tallinn. Settled in Estonia in 1922. Art studies began in 1930 at the painting studio of A. Kaigorodov, then from 1938 to 1941 at the State School of Art and Industry. Member of the Artists' Union since 1944. Created posters, postcards, caricatures of situations and stage designs, designed costumes, illustrations for children's books. In his main field – watercolor – he cultivated cityscapes, landscapes, including industrial landscapes, as well as still lifes and portraits.
Art historian Villem Raam wrote: "Pilar's student years and creative path have been inextricably linked to Tallinn. The virtuoso watercolor technique, the cheerfully alternating color range, and the boldly generalizing approach to form have opened up rich opportunities for the prolific master to transpose the seemingly endless motifs of his hometown into the language of art."
