Item dates from the Meiji Era of Japan (1868-1912), showcasing the distinctive Kamakura-bori carving technique that originated in the Kamakura period. The technique involves deeply carving the wood, then applying multiple layers of red lacquer (urushi) with traces of gilt, creating a rich dimensional effect that highlights the figures depicted.
