Muted browns, … Read more "Parrot Chair" - a seemingly quiet oil-on-canvas painting made in 1967 by the American artist Jennett Lam (1911-1985). Muted browns, grays, and beiges contrast with more saturated greens and teals. Lam has placed the chair at center; we can think of this as a still-life but curiously we are also invited to think of the idea of a "sitter" for a portrait - the seat without a sitter. Or maybe the chair is first of all an object that affects the space around it and vice versa. What is at front and what recedes? The title may allude to an optical color effect made by the chair's open-back woodwork and the wall behind, which gives a beautiful symmetry of two bird-like silhouettes.

This painting has been re-stretched and cleaned. It comes in its original metal-trimmed wood frame.

Signed on lower right and dated on the backside of the stretcher.
