The subject is mother and child. The edges of this handmade Japanese paper, or washi, has ragged, or deckled, edges either from the traditional papermaking process or from a manual technique called chigiri-e. This original deckle edge is created naturally when paper pulp is spread on a screen and dried, leaving a rough edge when the frame is removed. See less
