A large, richly detailed antique Mettlach Villeroy & Boch pitcher, form #1028, dating to the late 19th–early 20th century. Does have old repair at pour spout area.. See pics.
This impressive 14-inch vessel features a sculpted oak-bark ground, ivory-colored relief oak-leaf framing, and an incised German drinking verse panel:
“Doch nie zuviel und ohne Sinn,
Im Krug sitzt oft der Witz drinn!”
(“But never too much and without reason —
Wit often sits within the jug!”)
Complete with its pewter thumb-lift lid, this piece embodies the artistry and humor of Mettlach’s classic steins and pitchers. Displays beautifully despite its honest old repair, making it a fine addition for collectors of German pottery, tavern ware, or Mettlach forms.
