Gouache on paper in the style of the Neopolitan School, depicting a view of the Bay of Naples, specifically Villa Reale.
During the emerging tourism boom of Italy in the 18th century, landscape scenes like this one were a popular souvenir for tourists of 'The Grand Tour,' a multi-year journey throughout Europe traditionally taken by wealthy young men to complete their education through artistic and cultural immersion. These guaches were highly sought after as souvenirs as they were very easy to transport. This piece appears to be one such artistic relic.
Condition: Double fold noted in center of image. Some ripping noted at edges of work. Please see all images to determine condition, as they are considered part of the description. 'Naples' inscribed on back in blue ink, cursive.
Frame: Lovely, understated gold frame. String on back for hanging. Measures 22.5 x 16.5"
Provenance: This piece was sourced from a multi-million dollar estate on Long Island's Gold Coast. Its specific journey to this destination is unknown, as it has no documentation. However, the owners were world travelers and art collectors. Given the style, motif, and subject matter, this 'veduta' was likely purchased in Italy during the mid to late 19th century, possibly the very early 20th century.
