Impressive double-sided shop sign made of solid wood, originating from a Japanese tea dealer.
Dimensions: height 155 cm, width 30 cm, depth 3 cm
The hand-carved calligraphy reads “Awarded First-Class Gold Medal” on the right and “Kisen no Sono – Authorized Dealer of Fine Tea” in the center.
Dating from the Meiji period (late 19th – early 20th century), the sign retains its two original iron hanging loops, once used to suspend it from the façade of a traditional shop (mise). The wood has developed a beautiful dark patina with a fine natural grain, giving it a warm and authentic presence.
A decorative and rare piece of Japanese commercial history, sought after by collectors of antique shop signs, tea ceremony enthusiasts, and interior designers. Perfect as a statement piece in a modern interior, tearoom, or gallery.
