Title: Return to Form
Artist: Kristin Fairfield
Medium: Oil on Canvas
This painting explores the intimate, internal world of the tennis player mid-match. The dramatic shadow cast across the bright yellow court lines represents the psychological tension, focus, and fluid identity we inhabit on the court. There’s a duality in the image—how the body grounds us, while the shadow hints at the emotional and mental self we often compete with.
I’ve always found this moment—just after a step, before the next shot—to be where the real game happens. The worn shoes, the mid-motion pose, the solitary figure reaching forward all reflect the raw vulnerability and concentration that tennis demands. It’s part of my ongoing series on the inner game of tennis.
