Ed Zucca (b. 1946) is a professional furniture designer and manufacturer. He was born in Philadelphia, PA, attended the Philadelphia College of Art (PA), and now lives in Woodstock, CT. His furniture pieces have been featured in several exhibitions, including the American Craft Museum (NY), Peter Joseph Gallery (NY), Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PA), DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (MA), and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum (Providence, RI), as well as being included in multiple public and private collections. Zucca also received two Connecticut State Office of the Arts Individual Artists grants and a National Endowment for the Arts Craftsman Fellowship grant.
The studio furniture movement took shape in the mid-century era: "one maker (perhaps with a couple of assistants) creating self-designed, expressive furniture, entirely by hand. With the emergence of Wendell Castle on the scene in the 1960s, the sculptural implications of this early activity – its artistic potential – gradually became clear.... With Castle as a presiding eminence, younger figures – among them Tom Hucker, Wendy Maruyama, Alphonse Mattia, and Ed Zucca – made extraordinarily ambitious work, stylistically poised at the edge of postmodernism, but with a dedication to craftsmanship typically absent from that (other, larger) movement."
***Featured in this listing is an exceptional sculptural furniture piece - a twin-sized bed in the design of Yankee Stadium from the 1920s. The details are astounding and can be recognized by many-a-baseball fan - down to etching in the baseball figure's uniform that represents the pinstripe uniforms of Yankees players and the characteristic stadium features. The bed also features a football player representing the football occasionally played in the stadium. A one-of-a-kind piece for a lucky collector.
