This 6x9 antique Chinese Art Deco rug represents one of the most unique and rare, collectible designs of its provenance to join Rug & Kilim’s curation of the iconic movement—both an incredibly personal piece with heavy influences from the French market of the time and a one-of-a-kind pictorial design among its many beauties—made with a lush, rich hand-knotted wool circa 1920-1930.
On the Design:
Here there’s much more of a European, particularly French Art Deco sensibility than many Chinese Deco carpets of the time, especially present in the choice of colors and in the particularly fabulous pictorial element in the border.
That border is a gorgeous light pink, with a scroll of peacocks in brilliant indigo blues and other vibrant accents capturing the color creature. Admirers of the craft know pictorial rugs of any vintage and antique lineage to be the most sought-after and unique of all, but especially those with such an intentional, passionate design and distinction as this where the border of the rug is the star.
Still, the field hosts an equally rich burgundy red, underscoring a trellis of deep blue floral patterns in an equally interesting scale and style of repeat one seldom sees in this type of rug, again keeping with its influence from the French market. Keen eyes for detail might further notes a subtle Arts & Crafts sensibility in the particular choice of colors, as well as the general shape of the floral motifs throughout the all over patterns.
Everything from its level of detail, impressive range of colors, smart use of juxtaposed rich-and-light tones, and the particularly unique marriage of regal-meets-whimsical sensibility makes this a true one-of-a-kind Chinoiserie rug of the Jazz Age, with the most exceptional of designs yet still exemplary of the most desirable traits in its kind.
Condition:
This antique Chinese Art Deco rug further enjoys great condition for its age and origin, and a particularly uncommon, versatile size compared to many area rugs in its period.
