A serene mid-century impressionist oil on stretched canvas by listed artist William Grant Sherry, painted in 1961, depicting a tranquil woodland scene from Rockport, Maine. The composition is rendered in a soft, painterly style with layered, textural brushwork in honey golds, muted lavenders, and pale greens, creating a warm, ethereal glow. Set in its original Belgian wooden frame, this large statement piece would look incredible hung above a sofa, credenza, or headboard in a sophisticated mid-century home.
William Grant Sherry (1914–2003) was an American painter best known for his impressionistic and expressionist landscapes, city scenes, and abstract compositions. Born in Amagansett, New York, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and the Heatherley School of Art in London before exhibiting internationally. His work blended European academic technique with bold, modernist expression, often featuring rich color and dynamic texture. Sherry’s paintings were exhibited at the Ringling Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum, and in numerous solo shows across the U.S. and Europe. He also served as Art Director of the Florida Gulf Coast Art Center and taught in California later in life.
In addition to his artistic accomplishments, William Grant Sherry is remembered for his connection to Hollywood’s Golden Age. He was married to film legend Bette Davis from 1945 until 1950. This high-profile union brought Sherry a degree of celebrity and notoriety.
