The composition’s angular gothic revival buildings, horse-drawn cart, and smoky palette capture Chicago’s industrial soul through a modernist lens. Oil on stretched canvas, set in its original mid-century dark-stained wood frame. Signature present in lower right corner.

Joyce Wahl Treiman (b. 1922, Illinois) became a prodigy as a draughtsman, beginning her studies in a children's class at the age of eight, but was immediately transferred to an adult class. She studied with Philip Guston at the University of Iowa. Her career as an artist took her to Chicago and New York, and later to Los Angeles, where she lived until her death in 1991. Today her work is owned by prominent institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
