A finely cast pair of 19th-century gilt bronze and patinated bronze ewers, after Clodion (Claude Michel, 1738–1814).
Each ewer is modelled in an elegant Rococo manner, featuring a slender, tapering patinated bronze body richly decorated with high-relief classical figures, reminiscent of Clodion’s signature Bacchic and mythological compositions.
The ewers are fitted with gracefully scrolled gilt bronze handles, rising in an organic, serpentine sweep from the rim. The flared, asymmetrical lips are finely chased, displaying detailed texturing characteristic of high-quality 19th-century casting workshops inspired by Clodion’s oeuvre.
Each vessel stands on a circular gilt bronze foot and coordinating dish, both delicately engraved and chased with foliate and floral motifs. The warm gilding contrasts beautifully with the darker patination of the bodies, giving the pair a harmonious and refined presence.
Altogether, this pair reflects the 19th-century revival of late 18th-century French decorative arts, capturing the charm, movement, and sensuality associated with Clodion’s sculptural style.
