A deeply moving 19th-century oil on panel painting by Charles de Groux (1825–1870), a Belgian painter known for his social realism, often depicted scenes of poverty, hardship, and working-class struggles. This intimate scene captures a mother and children in a quiet moment of humility and warmth, rendered with the artist’s signature chiaroscuro and emotional sincerity. De Groux’s masterful treatment of light, texture, and expression evokes both dignity and tenderness, hallmarks of his humanist vision that inspired later artists, including Vincent van Gogh, who admired de Groux's ability to capture authentic human emotion.
