The earliest dated examples of soumaks made in the first quarter of the 19 th century. The term Soumak is refer to a specific style of brocading. The sequence of the progressive wrapping of warp by weft is consistently forward over and back under, with a span ratio, usually, of 2 : 1.

The town of Bidjov is located near the Caspian Sea, lies on the north-eastern slopes of Shahdag mountain. Due to its geographic advantage, the premium quality of wool obtained from the animals once a year. Then, it's spun by hand and dyed with the plants to add color. This particular example is in smaller dimension than the other examples of Caucasian Soumaks (variety of large Soumaks made in Caucasia woven in larger dimension like 7x10 or larger). We see characteristic Bidjov design in the center field, highlighted with ivory, blue and peach on the brick red center field. The piece is in a very good condition, originally obtained by a collector.
