This work is part of the portfolio of 30 lithographic plates created by the painter Pablo Picasso and the photographer André Villers, Diurnes.
Fascinated by Provence, where they both lived, they decided to work together, applying decoupages with silhouettes of typically Picasso-esque figures from fauna and mythology to landscapes and natural elements photographed by Villers. The idea was to combine photograms with conventional photographic prints.
For Diurnes, Picasso made numerous decoupages, cutting people and animals out of paper. The horses, goats, and birds are realistic, but Picasso mostly simplified the figures. In the late 1940s, the artist had visited Henri Matisse in his studio, where Matisse was just beginning to use the cut-out technique. Shortly after, Picasso began drawing with scissors. In 1953, Picasso began making foldable metal sculptures that were related to paper cut-out models. The metal sculptures and paper sketches depict the heads and bodies of animals and people, as well as masks. This repertoire is found again in Diurnes.
Diurnes, which translates from French as diurnal butterfly or diurnal animals, is an unbound artist's book published in 1962 by the Berggruen gallery in Paris.
